Sandwich ideas

July 2000

Page1 of 1

Sandwiches make ideal carbohydrate based snacks at any time of the day and they needn’t be boring.  By using different types of bread and fillings you can bring a new life to sandwiches.  Why not use the lists below to mix and match and make the sandwich of your choice…...?

Breads:

There are many breads available on the market, choose from one of these or use an alternative: white bread, wholemeal bread, rye bread, walnut bread, sun-dried tomato loaf, pitta bread, french bread, bagel, wholemeal muffins, soda bread, ciabatta or rolls.

Fillings:

(Use a scraping of low fat spread or margarine on the bread if desired)

BLT

1 rasher bacon (grilled), lettuce and tomato.

Egg salad

1 hard-boiled egg mixed with 1 tbsp. (15ml) low calorie mayonnaise, salad.

Ham and pickle salad

2oz (50g) lean ham, pickle, salad.

Carrot and cheese

1oz (25g) reduced fat cheddar (grated), 1 carrot (grated) bound together with natural yogurt.

Roast chicken and grape salad

2oz (50g) roast chicken, 6 grapes (halved) and watercress.

Creamy banana

1 medium banana mashed together with 1oz (25g) low fat soft cheese.

Cottage cheese and pesto

4oz (100g) cottage cheese mixed together with 1 tbsp. (15ml) pesto sauce, salad.

Cheese and marmite

Scraping of marmite, 1z (25g) reduced fat cheddar cheese (grated).

Obviously these are only a few of the many different fillings that you can use in sandwiches, so feel free to make up your own combinations, but remember to choose ingredients that are low in fat and try to add salad where appropriate.
